Calling all parents
I need your help for an assignment. I'm taking a Children's Literature course this semester and my assignment is to find as many children as I can and ask them what their favorite poems are and why. I only know three kids (mine).

So, if any of you have or are close to kids, would you mind asking them what their favorite poems are and why and telling me? I would reeeeeeeally appreciate it! I'm desperate!!

EDIT: For those parents whose children seem to have no familiarity with poetry, try asking them if they have a favorite nursery rhyme, or children's songs (a lot of traditional songs come from poems). Lullabies are another example. Of course, there's Shel Silverstein (my favorite). Riddles or jokes that rhyme count. There's also "playground verse", like the rhymes for skipping rope. So if they have no response to "what's your favorite poem" they might have one to "what's your favorite thing that rhymes" ;)

How young do you want the kids? Cuz Devin'll be 15 in a couple weeks, but I'm sure he has a fave poem. And it's probably Shel Silverstein. ;)

Deanne isn't here right now (she'll be back soon) but I can tell you right now her favorite poem is this one my mom taught her about a snowball. I don't know who wrote it but it goes like this:

I made myself a snowball
As perfect as can be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first -- it wet the bed!

Actually, I just Googled it and someone credited it to Shel Silverstein.

And as for why, (a) it's probably the only poem she knows. I'm not big on poetry and probably never read any to her. And (b) she loves the silly surprise ending.

When she gets back I'll ask her if there are any more she knows and likes and why.
